Sharmill Films has acquired Sergei Loznitsa’s masterful Cannes Competition title, Two Prosecutors. Described as ‘crisply fable-like’, the film centers on a local prosecutor in Stalinist Russia who risks challenging injustice.
Two Prosecutors is the joint highest scored film on the Screen International 2025 Cannes Jury Grid.
Soviet Union, 1937. In a dismal prison, letters from prisoners, begging for an intervention in their cases, are burned by the thousands. Somehow, one letter – written in blood – reaches the new local prosecutor, Kornyev (Aleksandr Kuznetsov). With naïve determination and an enthusiasm for justice, Kornyev sets out to meet the letter’s author – a man who has suffered torture at the hands of the secret police. It is a meeting with staggering repercussions.
Two Prosecutors will premiere this June as part of the Sydney Film Festival. With a national theatrical release to follow later in 2025. Natalie Miller A.O. said she is delighted to release Two Prosecutors following on from Sharmill’s release of Loznitsa’s earlier film In The Fog.
