Freud’s Last Session

Freud’s Last Session

Starring Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode

March 28, 2024

Sharmill Films and Jump Street Films today announced the acquisition of Matt Brown’s forthcoming feature film, FREUD’S LAST SESSION, starring Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins (THE FATHER) as Sigmund Freud and Emmy nominee Matthew Goode (THE CROWN) as C.S. Lewis.

On the eve of the Second World War and nearing the end of his life, Sigmund Freud invites iconic author C.S. Lewis (“The Chronicles of Narnia”) for a debate over the existence of God. Innovatively, the film explores Freud’s unique relationship with his lesbian daughter Anna, and Lewis’ unconventional romance with his best friend’s mother. FREUD’S LAST SESSION interweaves past, present and fantasy, bursting from the confines of Freud’s study on a dynamic journey.

FREUD’S LAST SESSION has been adapted by Mark St. Germain from his play of the same name. The film also stars Liv Lisa Fries, Jodi Balfour, Stephen Campbell Moore, Jeremy Northam and Orla Brady.

Matt Brown previously wrote and directed THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY starring Jeremy Irons and Dev
Patel.

Academy Award winner Luciana Arrighi (MRS. HARRIS GOES TO PARIS, HOWARDS END) is Production Designer and Ben Smithard (THE FATHER) is Cinematographer. Production took place in Ireland, where a replica of Freud’s London home was created. The film is an official Irish-UK co-production and is currently in post-production.

The sale was negotiated by Natalie Miller AO, Executive Director, Sharmill Films and Jamie Bialkower,
Director of Jump Street Films with Maya Amsellem, Managing Director of WestEnd Films. Sony Pictures
Classics has North American rights.

“Following the outstanding performance of Anthony Hopkins in the recent Sharmill Films release THE FATHER, we are delighted to be distributing another feature film with Hopkins in the lead. I consider him one of the world’s most outstanding actors, and we look forward to his interpretation of Sigmund Freud”, said Miller.

“Beyond my own intellectual curiosity and inclination towards this piece as the son of a psychiatrist, there is a deep recognition of how incredibly timely and important this film is. We live in an age that is so ideologically polarised, where everyone is stuck in their own tribes, with no real dialogue, no intellectual curiosity. I want to make a film for all audiences that can be emotional, thought- provoking and creative. A film that can ask the big questions, while investigating what’s at the heart of all human condition: love, faith and mortality.”

FREUD’S LAST SESSION will be released in cinemas in early 2024.
